Songbird Suet Cakes

Ingredients (makes 12-14 cakes):

One 5-lb bag cornmeal
5 cups peanut butter (crunchy or smooth)
5 cups lard
6 cups mixed bird seed
1 cup thistle seed (or ½ cup thistle and ½ cup black oil sunflower)
1 cup raisins or dried currants

Instructions:

Thoroughly mix by hand in a large bowl. This mixture will be very sticky, so you may want to smear lard on your hands before mixing. Firmly press mixture into a standard store-bought suet mold greased with lard. After the cake is formed in the mold, eject the cake onto a flat pan or tray. Let sit for 30 minutes to dry and harden. Wrap in plastic wrap or wax paper and put in a freezer bag for storage. Store in a refrigerator or freezer.
